PENCIL Annual Spring gala
04/01/2009 - By Cipriani Wall Street
PENCIL held its Annual Spring Gala on Wednesday, April 1 at Cipriani Wall Street to honor outstanding partnerships between New York City business leaders, companies and public school principals.
The event, which attracted more than 600 people, including Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein, raised $1.4 million for PENCIL.
Since 1995, PENCIL has served as New York City’s leading nonprofit facilitator of private sector engagement in public education, launching thousands of innovative partnerships between members of the City’s business community and principals at schools throughout the five boroughs. Through the “PENCIL Partnership Program”, business leaders have the unique opportunity to leverage their skills, expertise, and resources to help meet the needs of an individual school community.
“PENCIL is doing the critical work our City needs to develop its next generation of leaders,” said New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “By creating unique partnerships across sectors, they are mobilizing the business community to play a meaningful role in the education of our students.”
PENCIL’s Spring 2009 Gala honored the following individuals and companies for their contributions to New York City public schools:
• Frank J. Bisignano, Chief Administrative Officer, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and
Member of PENCIL’s Board of Directors. (NYC Public School Alumni Award)
• IBM , Accepted by Steven A. Mills, Senior Vice
President and Group Executive, IBM Software Group (PENCIL Corporate Partner Award)
• Donald F. Donahue, Chairman & CEO, along with Daniel Hobson, Director of
Diversity, The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation and Gail Gaines, Principal, The Essence School (PENCIL Partnership Award)
"Far beyond dollars and cents, our partnerships provide school leaders with knowledge, tools, and resources that are transforming the way our children learn,” said Michael Haberman, President of PENCIL. “We celebrate the extraordinary efforts of the principals and business leaders who, through their PENCIL Partnerships, are making a lasting impact on the lives of our City’s young people, and opening their eyes to the possibilities that await them.”
PENCIL (www.pencil.org) builds and supports customized relationships between business leaders and principals to inspire innovation and transform public schools. By bringing together the best ideas, resources and talent across sectors, PENCIL develops strong leaders, builds school capacity, enhances student learning, and inspires greater community and corporate support, to create real change in our City’s schools.
