The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renowned Costume Institute Gala – the annual
black-tie dinner to benefit the Museum’s Costume Institute – takes place on May 5,
2008, celebrating the exhibition Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, which will be
on view

The 750 dinner guests arrived at the Metropolitan Museum at 7:00 p.m. for an
inaugural viewing of the exhibition and cocktails in the Museum’s Carroll and
Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court. Dinner will follow at around 8:30 p.m.
at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing.

Gala Evening Celebrates Superheroes
The Metropolitan Museum gratefully acknowledges Stephanie Winston Wolkoff of
Vogue for her invaluable organizational efforts on behalf of the event.

Décor
The décor for the evening was inspired by the larger-than-life dynamism of
superheroes. As guests entered the Museum’s Great Hall, they were confronted by three superhero figures looming nearly 20 feet high – Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman – made of high-density foam and painted to resemble monumental sculptures. A red carpet will led the guests through an allée of white dogwood trees to the exhibition, then on to cocktails in the Petrie Court and dinner at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing.

The Temple of Dendur room was transformed for the dinner into an
evocation of Superman’s Arctic Fortress of Solitude, with huge “ice crystals”
jutting from the pool of water surrounding the ancient Egyptian temple. A
footbridge provides the guests with a path over the water to their tables, and
thousands of glimmering white lights cast reflections throughout the room,
completing the effect of Superman’s otherworldly lair.
The design for the gala evening was created by Nathan Crowley and Raul Avila.
