Sandeep Nath poet and lyricist presents the anthem written for Share & Care Foundation (SCF)

Volunteers including entrepreneurs, business leaders, high-net worth individuals and many other professionals form the backbone of this organization by raising funds, collecting items for donation, and dedicating their time to improve lives in Indian villages, slums, and other economically challenged regions. Two great events were held this fall to support their cause - The Share and Care Foundation’s 29^th Annual Gala, and the Share and Care Young Professional Committee’s 5^th Annual Gala!

The Share and Care 29^th Annual Gala, which took place on October 23^rd, was the largest event of the year for the foundation, with over 1,500 attendees present! This year’s Gala helped to raise $1,000,000, which will be used to support programs in primary health care and education in India, in turn enriching the lives of thousands of women and children.

The evening included a silent auction, remarkable music performances by several Bollywood playback singers, and a dedicated poetic song by famed Bollywood lyricist and writer Sandeep Nath. Nath has written lyrics for over 50

Bollywood films, including Corporate, Fashion and Saawariya. Donors, sponsors, and others who have made a significant impact were also honored for their philanthropic endeavors and commitment to Share and Care’s mission.

Share and Care kept the spirit of giving going with the Young Professional Committee’s 5^th Annual Gala, which took place on November 4^th. The event was held by the Young Professional Committee, a group that was initiated by the children of the founders of Share and Care. Their quest was to open a window of opportunity for Young Professionals and their peers to volunteer and support Share and Care’s mission to help the less fortunate.

The event consisted of an intimate dinner and dance at the Manhattan Penthouse, which raised funds for projects that target the younger generation. This year’s proceeds will go to Aapne Aap, and Samadhan. Aapne Aap’s mission is to empower women and children to escape sex trafficking by breaking the cycle of poverty and discrimination that pushes women into prostitution. They do this by providing education, making healthcare available, and enhancing job skills.

Samadhan is a project that aids children with disabilities and their families by finding appropriate therapeutic and education services for them.

Founded in 1992 Face to Face is a humanitarian and educational surgical exchange program sponsored by the Educational and Research Foundation of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Surgeons and other medical professionals provide complimentary care to those who suffer from facial deformities caused by birth or trauma. To date, Face to Face volunteers have helped over 1,000 people worldwide.

Established in 1978, the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence assists and empowers victims of domestic violence and sexual assault while challenging and changing social systems that tolerate and perpetuate abuse. The coalition provides hotlines, housing, counseling, legal and educational services, and systems and legislative advocacy for victims. The event is co-chaired by Facial and Reconstructive Surgeon

Andrew Jacono and Park Slope Productions. Dr. Jacono is the senior advisor of the Face to Face committee. As well as offering pro bono surgery to victims of domestic violence, he is also a volunteer surgeon for “Beyond Our Borders” and “Healing the Children”. Both nonprofits help underprivileged children from around the world receive state of the art surgery to repair disfigurements due to cancer, trauma, and birth defects.

Tickets for the benefit are available for $350 and $500 for VIP tickets. VIP ticket holders will have access to a private cocktail party with Dr. Jacono, Paul Nassif and Adrienne Maloof as well as priority seating for the event. On Sunday October 2, 2011 at 5 pm, Celebrity Series of Boston will celebrate its 73rd season with a special fundraising event, Audra McDonald in Concert, an exhilarating orchestra performance by four-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald. Join the Celebrity Series at Symphony Hall for a sensational music event to benefit the Arts, Education and Community Program which allows thousands of youth with opportunities to experience and participate in the performing arts through concerts, workshops, and the AileyCamp Boston, an intensive six-week summer dance program for Boston middle school students.

The Celebrity Series of Boston is New England’s leading presenter of music, dance and the performing arts from around the world. Celebrity Series brings performances by instrumental and vocal soloists, orchestras and chamber ensembles, dance companies, jazz, folk and ethnic artists and ensembles to Boston’s major concert halls. They have presented Audra McDonald in concert four times in the past ten years. This will be her fifth
performance with Celebrity Series.

Audra McDonald is a Juilliard-trained singer, actress and champion of contemporary musical theatre. Guests slipped off their shoes to take on the Waterwalk and see what it’s like for the millions who have to walk miles for their water. They lined up and pledged their birthdays to raise money for water projects at their mycharity: water wall. They read and watched stories from Cambodia to Liberia to Haiti to Central African Republic. And then they took to the stage to fund clean water projects for three countries in our Live Auction.

The Live Auction was kicked off by long-time charity: water supporter Virginia Clay, which gave $100,000 towards projects in Central African Republic. They were followed by Eastlake Community Church members from Seattle, who stormed the stage to give another $100,000 towards C.A.R. This finished off the funds needed to reach our $1.7 million September Campaign goal — now, charity: water will be able to provide every Bayaka person in Central African Republic with clean drinking water!

Some of us drink in the name of charity, some of us shop and then there are those who run in the name of charity.  While I have perfected the former two, I will leave the latter to Kristina Piccarretto(pictured below) who will be participating in the NYC Marathon on behalf of the Aubrey Fund.
