Walk. Run. Help.
The Peapod Project
Helping Families Cope With The Loss Of A Child
2011 Disco Dash, Saturday, August 27th, 9 a.m. Rain or Shine
The Peapod Project was founded by Annette and Ted Stenstrom four years ago due to a personal family tragedy. Their daughter Moreland Grace known affectionately to them as Gigi lived for only 16 days. She was treated at Children’s Memorial Hospital, but died due to complications of being unable to breathe on her own. Ted and Annette quickly began taking photos with family and friends, making footprints, and handprints creating lasting memories of her. “We felt like we essentially made a lifetime of memories with her” says her father Ted who along with his wife Annette who now provides families with this gift to support families with memory keepsake boxes, which include hats and booties along with hand print/footprint kits, a professional photographer or photo services” says Annette. The Peapod Project also provides extensive resources to hospital staff to guide them in assisting families through this very difficult time. Annette and Ted say they created fundraising events such as the Disco Dash 5k to raise additional funds needed to support the program currently in operation at Children’s Memorial Hospital and to fund other area hospitals that they are trying to reach. “We almost had to cancel our last 5k race because we didn’t have enough funding, and in the 11th hour Guaranteed Rate generously sponsored last years race and we were able to walk and run in honor of Gigi and all the other children who have passed,” says Annette.
On August 27, 2011 at 9:00am at Diversey Harbor in Lincoln Park you can boogey your way along a 5K course in an effort to help The Peapod Project-named by Annette’s sister who thought Gigi looked like a “pea in the pod”.
Guaranteed Rate (a nationwide mortgage company corporately located in Chicago) didn’t hesitate to help again for this years race “A loan officer who is friends with the Stenstrom family asked if we could help and immediately we saw this as an excellent resource for families and wanted to help” said Victor Ciardelli, the President and CEO of Guaranteed Rate.
